The Expertise Ecosystem?

Over the past twenty years, Software as a Service (SaaS) has revolutionised small business management. Many business owners will be familiar with the concept of the “SaaS ecosystem”, the combination of SaaS apps used by a company to support operations. Even a low-tech firm might use a CRM system, a payment provider, online banking, accountancy software, a web-hosting firm and a business intelligence tool. For most SMEs, the idea of building a bespoke CRM or payments system from scratch would be a ridiculous extravagance. And it would be equally absurd to suggest that these tools were out-of-reach due to cost considerations. We simply take it for granted that shared, cloud-based solutions will meet our needs for a reasonable fee. Could the same logic ever be applied to the knowledge economy? Could it be that, in the not-too-distant-future, entrepreneurs will discuss their “expertise ecosystem”, in the same way they refer to their SaaS stack?
